 "Telematics" is the broad term used within the automotive industry to describe products and services enabled by the convergence of communications (including wireless and the Internet), Global Positioning Systems (“GPS”) location technologies and information technology.
Simply defined, Telematics is in-vehicle communications. More specifically, Telematics is the vehicle’s capability to communicate with the outside world. It combines wireless voice and data services with Global Positioning System (GPS) technology to provide specific location services like vehicle navigation, tracking, and emergency services.
ThinAir applications available and planned include automatic emergency callout in event of accident, security and anti-theft systems, remote diagnostics and repair, location-based and navigation services, logistics and fleet management, information services, office applications and soon, entertainment services.

The growth in telematics is being driven by the following trends:
- Affordable hardware – Increased volume and subsidies from OEMs has led to a decline in hardware costs, making telematics more affordable for consumers and OEMs.
- Increased demand – The North American market was initially slow to adopt navigation and other telematics related technology. However, the OEM penetration rate is fostering awareness and as a corollary, demand.
- Technology trends – Embedded technology applications pervade the modern automobile. These applications and functions work through a network, which uses telematics as the platform to bring various technologies together.
The North American Telematics market, consisting of OEM equipment sales, subscription fees, and airtime minutes have grown from $500 Million in 2002 to over $3 Billion in 2006. This growth is expected to grow exponentially and continue for many years to come.
